An exploration into personalising windows through desktop themes and styles.

Hello, I've decided that I definitely need to buy at least Windowblinds (can't be dealing with Vista's black taskbar any more).  I'm a bit confused at what's included in the various packages available and their abilities though.

I should probably start by saying what I need and would like:

  1. I certainly need to be able to change the look of my own computer. Vista is nice in parts but that black taskbar for one thing is making it difficult to work with.  A more coloful look and more choices in appearance would be great.  I need Windowblinds for this I believe.
  2. It would be nice to create some new themes myself and maybe give them to other Windowblinds users.  For this, I think I'd need SkinStudio ?
  3. And finally, if it's possible, it would be quite nice to create new themes to give to non-Windowblinds users.  Is there anything within Objectdesktop that will do this?  I've been looking at ThemeManager but I'm not sure if (or something else?) it enables  themes to be created for non-windowblinds users?

Okies, so I'm pretty sure I want Windowblinds and Skinstudio (Pro) for the first two points above, so if I'm getting those I can get them bundled for $29.95 according to the page at https://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/purchase.asp   and this appears to be Windowblinds 7 Beta.

If I want to opt for Objectdesktop, I'd find it difficult to afford the "Ultimate" version so Ideally I'd be looking at the Standard version of Objectdesktop at $49.95 (can't really afford that but if it helps with point 3 above then it's a possibility).  According to the page at https://www.stardock.com/products/odnt/purchase.asp  the Standard version of Objectdesktop includes ThemeManager (great!) but beyond this I get confused.

Why is me confuddled?

Well, on the first page that I mentioned,  https://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/purchase.asp  , it's ticked that the $49.95 version of ObjectDesktop includes Skinstudio.

However, on the second page that I mentioned,  https://www.stardock.com/products/odnt/purchase.asp , it's indicated (no tick) that the $49.95   version of ObjectDesktop does not include Skinstudio.

Could someone confirm for sure which is correct?

Also, if I opted for ObjectDesktop , does version 7 of Windowblinds come in with this or just version 6?

As a bit of background, I'm running Vista Home Basic on a new computer (about 2 months old) so not likely to upgrade to Windows 7 for a long time.

Sorry for so many questions - just want to ensure my hard eaned pennies are going in the right direction .

Sincere thanks to everyone on this thread.  I've slept on the decision a couple of nights and I'm pretty certain I'm going to go for ObjectDesktop Ultimate.  The $69.95 is going to hurt but I'm hoping it'll be worth it.

A wise decision. Be sure to download and use Impulse. You can update all your software that way, and archive the programs as well. Theme Manager is useful as well; you can download and apply themes; that is a group of "skins" like a wallpaper, a WindowBlinds skin, an IconPackager theme, etc. It will also create a copy of your "desktop"; that is whatever you are using that you have setup and that it is able to apply. Check reply #14 for other good skinning programs. Good luck.
